How do I know if an offer I receive is a scam?

Whenever you receive an offer, it is important to be aware of the potential that the offer may be a scam. Scams often involve making false promises about rewards or services in order to gain access to your personal information or money. There are a few signs to look for that may indicate you are being scammed: 1. Requests for personal information. Legitimate companies typically will not request your personal information, such as your Social Security number or credit card number, without verifying your identity. 2. Payments in advance. Be wary of companies that require payments in advance or ask for payments in non-traditional forms, such as wire transfer or gift cards. 3. Pressure to act quickly. Legitimate companies won’t pressure you to make decisions on the spot. Scammers may try to increase urgency around the offer so that you don’t have time to research the company or the terms of the offer. In Texas, consumer frauds are prohibited by the Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act (DTPA). The law requires that businesses must clearly and conspicuously disclose all material terms of a transaction, and prohibits false or misleading representations. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, you may file a complaint with the Texas Attorney General’s office.
