What is a “cease and desist” letter?
A cease and desist letter is a formal notice that a person has committed an illegal action and the recipient must stop it. It is usually a notice sent by an individual or a company to another person or company, demanding that they stop (cease) an illegal behavior (and desist from continuing it). This notice serves to alert the recipient that they are engaging in activities that are illegal and must stop. The letter legally orders the recipient to cease such activities, and to "desist" from engaging in any further consumer fraud. Failure to comply with the cease and desist letter can result in legal action being taken against the recipient.
