What is a parenting plan?
A parenting plan is a written agreement between the parents that outlines how they will raise and care for their child or children. It addresses all issues related to child custody, including who the child will live with, how the parents will communicate, decision-making processes related to education, religious upbringing, and health care, and the parents’ respective roles and responsibilities. The parenting plan also includes provisions for when the child spends time with each parent, regardless of whether it is on an alternating schedule, extended summers, or holidays. In Florida, all parents must have a parenting plan in place if they wish to finalize a divorce or child custody arrangement. The parenting plan must be created with the best interests of the child in mind. It should be customized to fit the child’s needs and the family’s lifestyle. The parenting plan should also be as specific as possible to ensure the child’s safety and well-being and prevent future disputes. After the parenting plan is written, the courts must review it and determine if it is in the best interests of the child. If the court finds the plan is adequate, they will sign off on it and it will become part of the child custody or divorce agreement. Both parents must then abide by the terms of the parenting plan and follow all of the guidelines that have been set.
