Are child support payments based on income?

In Alaska, child support payments are based on both the income of both parents, as well as other factors. The Child Support Services Division (CSSD) of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services is responsible for setting child support payments. CSSD uses the Alaska Child Support Guidelines to determine the payment amount. The Alaska Child Support Guidelines are based on the combined adjusted gross income of both parents, the number of children to be supported, the number of nights each child spends with each parent, and the costs of any health insurance and child care expenses. Additionally, if needed, the court may consider other factors such as the resources of each parent, the relative earning ability of each parent, and any special needs of the child or custodial parent. Ultimately, the Guidelines are used to calculate the amount of support based on the parents’ incomes and other applicable factors. In Alaska, the non-custodial parent (the parent who does not have primary custody of the child) is typically obligated to pay child support. This payment is generally made directly to the custodial parent, who then uses the money to cover various expenses related to the child.
