Are child support payments based on income?

In Oregon, child support payments are indeed based on income. The Oregon Child Support Program (OCSP) calculates child support payments based on the income of each parent and the number of children that need to be supported. Oregon uses the Income Shares Model, which considers both parents’ incomes and any childcare costs. This model also takes into account any existing child support or spousal support payments that have already been ordered. All of this information is then used to calculate the amount of child support that should be paid each month. Income is determined using the parents’ wages, salaries, bonuses, dividends, pensions, and salary from self-employment. Other incomes such as Social Security benefits, workers compensation, unemployment benefits, and alimony are also taken into account. To ensure that payments are fair and accurate, the Child Support Program will also look at the amount of time each parent spends caring for the child as well as whether one parent pays for health insurance. In addition, parents may agree to deviate from the Child Support Program’s guideline amount if they feel it is necessary. However, the court will review any deviations agreed upon by the parents to ensure they are in the child’s best interests. Ultimately, Oregon’s Child Support Program uses a combination of factors to determine the amount of child support that must be paid each month in order to ensure the child’s basic needs are met.
