What is the standard for awarding child support?

In Alaska, a court uses the Alaska Child Support Guidelines to determine child support awards. This system is based on the incomes of both parents, the number of children and the cost of providing for those children. The court considers the parents’ incomes, expenses, insurance, daycare and other financial obligations to determine how much each parent should contribute to the support of the child (or children). The court will also take into consideration any extenuating circumstances that would require one parent to pay more than the other. These may include the ability of the parents to provide for the child, the time each parent will spend with the child and whether one parent is the primary custodial parent. The court will typically use the Alaska Child Support Guidelines as the base for the support order. However, the judge has the power to deviate from the guidelines if the parents agree or if the judge finds that the order should be modified because of unique circumstances. Child support typically covers expenses for the basic needs of a child, such as food, housing, and clothing. It also may include medical care and extracurricular activities. The amount of child support is determined by the court, taking into account both parents’ incomes. The court may also consider if a parent is paying spousal support or any other costs related to the child.
