What is civil law?

Civil Law governs disputes between individuals or organizations, as opposed to criminal law, which governs disputes between individuals and the government. Civil law covers a wide variety of legal issues ranging from family law to business transactions and even personal injury cases. In Kansas, civil law includes contracts, torts (injury claims), real estate, business law, and consumer protection, among other issues. Contracts are agreements between two parties where one party agrees to provide goods or services to the other in exchange for something of value. Torts are civil wrongs that result in harm, such as physical injury, and can include medical malpractice, product liability, and negligence. Real estate law refers to the legal process of buying and selling land and property, including the rights and obligations of landlord and tenant. Business law includes an array of legal topics related to the formation, ownership, and management of companies, such as drafting and enforcing contracts and protecting intellectual property. Finally, consumer protection laws govern the sale and purchase of goods and services, including warranties and deceptive trade practices. In Kansas, civil law is enforced through state courts, and individuals or organizations affected by civil law can seek restitution or damages from the other party. Civil law is essential in protecting individuals’ and business’ rights and ensuring fairness in the marketplace.
