What is a class action lawsuit?
A class action lawsuit is a type of civil law legal case where one or several people or groups, the plaintiffs, sue on behalf of a larger group or class of people. This group is called the class, and all members of the class are considered part of the lawsuit. The lawsuit is typically filed against a defendant in order to seek a certain remedy or restitution for the class. In Colorado, class action lawsuits can be filed in state or federal court. Class action lawsuits are used when there is a group of individuals who have suffered similar injuries or losses due to the same cause of action. Often times, the individual losses are too small for each person to file a separate lawsuit, so a class action lawsuit is the best option for obtaining justice. In the case of a class action, the court will decide the remedy for the entire class, rather than each individual suffering from the same harm. Class action lawsuits are becoming increasingly common, and may involve many different types of situations. For example, a class action may be filed against a company that is suspected of deceiving its customers or violating consumer protection laws. The final result of a class action lawsuit may include a monetary settlement or other forms of compensation for the plaintiff class. Additionally, a judgment may be entered against the company in order to stop the wrongful conduct from continuing.
