How are class action settlements distributed?

Class action settlements are distributed to affected individuals in a variety of ways. Generally, the individuals involved in the class action lawsuit must submit a claim form in order to receive a settlement payment. Depending on the settlement agreement, the claim forms may need to be filled out and returned to the settlement administrator, or sent to the attorney representing the class members. Once the claims are received, the settlement administrator or an independent audit firm will begin to process the claims. Claims are typically reviewed to make sure they meet the terms of the settlement agreement before the settlement funds can be distributed. The settlement administrator will then distribute payments to those who have submitted valid claims. Payments are usually issued by check or through direct deposit. In some cases, settlement funds may be allocated to a trust fund, which holds the money until it is distributed to eligible claimants. The amount of the settlement fund may not be enough to cover all claims. If the fund is not large enough, the settlement administrator typically distributes pro rata payments, meaning payments are distributed on a proportional basis among all those who submit valid claims. It is important to note that individual claims may be denied if they do not meet the terms of the settlement agreement. In addition, the court must approve any settlements before they are distributed to class members.
