What forms of class action relief are available?
Class action relief is available to a group of people with similar legal claims against the same defendant. In Washington, there are three main forms of class action relief: monetary relief, injunctive relief, and declaratory relief. Monetary relief is when the defendant is required to pay an amount of money to all claimants. This money is typically used to compensate claimants for any damages they experienced as a result of their claims. Injunctive relief is when the defendant is either forbidden from doing something, or required to do something, in order to resolve the class action suit. This type of relief may be granted when, for example, the defendant is found to have violated a law, and the court orders the defendant to stop this behavior. Declaratory relief is when the court declares a legal position on an issue without granting any monetary relief. This type of relief typically occurs when the court needs to decide which party is correct in a legal dispute. The court will issue a declaration declaring one party as correct and the other as incorrect. Overall, these three forms of class action relief are available in Washington. Monetary relief is available to compensate claimants for damages, injunctive relief can be granted to stop or require certain behaviors, and declaratory relief can be used to declare a legal position on a dispute.
