What is the difference between class action and single plaintiffs lawsuits?
Class action lawsuits are lawsuits taken by multiple individuals, while single plaintiff lawsuits are taken by just one individual. In a class action lawsuit, someone who has already experienced the same problem as other plaintiffs begins the proceedings, and if their complaint meets the requirements to be filed as a class action, any additional plaintiffs who experienced the same problem must also file a claim to have their case heard. In Washington, class action lawsuits are governed by the state’s Consumer Protection Act. This Act is designed to ensure that businesses are acting ethically and in accordance with the law. The Act protects consumers from shady practices like false advertising, warranty issues, and deceptive discounts. When multiple people are affected by the same issue, a class action lawsuit allows them to join together in one voice in order to seek justice. Single plaintiff lawsuits, on the other hand, are typically brought when an individual has suffered privacy issues, or has been injured or damaged due to the negligence of another party. In a single plaintiff lawsuit, a plaintiff does not need to join with others in order to file a claim. Rather, they can file on their own and seek justice for their individual situation. In Washington, class action lawsuits are often favored over single plaintiff lawsuits. This is because class actions can provide a much larger compensation to the plaintiffs involved, while also deterring businesses from engaging in the same unethical behaviors. Additionally, the court system is relieved of the burden of trying numerous cases of similar issues.
