What happens after a class action lawsuit is settled?

When a class action lawsuit is settled in the state of Kansas, the parties involved agree to a resolution or settlement. This resolution will outline how the people who filed the lawsuit will be compensated for their losses, and any other conditions that must be met. After the settlement is approved by the court, a notice is sent out to all class members. This notice will explain the details of the settlement and how class members can file a claim to receive their compensation, if they are entitled to it. Class members have the option to either accept the settlement or they can opt-out, where they can pursue the lawsuit on their own. If a class member decides to accept the settlement, the money or compensation they receive is usually distributed through a claims procedure outlined in the settlement agreement. The claims procedure will explain who is eligible for compensation and how much they will receive. In certain cases, class members may also receive additional compensation in the form of coupons, vouchers, or other awards. In these situations, the class members will receive a notice explaining how to redeem their awards, along with any instructions or deadlines associated with the process. Once the compensation has been distributed to all class members, the class action lawsuit is officially closed. However, if any class members did not receive their compensation or any other awards, they are still allowed to file a claim with the court to receive their due amount.
