What is the difference between class action and individual representation?

Class action law and individual representation are two different types of legal proceedings available to address a dispute. Class action law is a type of litigation process in which a large group of people (referred to as a “class”) are represented as a single plaintiff or defendant in a lawsuit. During a class action lawsuit, the court decides on a verdict that applies to all members of the class. This type of litigation is beneficial for large cases that would require far too much time and effort for individual representation. Individual representation is when a single person or entity is represented in a lawsuit. This type of legal action is more time-consuming and expensive because each individual must be represented in court separately. Unlike a class action lawsuit, the verdict in an individual representation case applies only to the person or entity filing the lawsuit. In Alaska, class action laws have been put in place to protect the rights of consumers and businesses alike, allowing large groups of people to band together in pursuit of justice. While individual representation is more expensive and time consuming, it is the only way to ensure that a single person or entity receives their desired outcome from a legal battle.
