What are the laws forbidding hacking and other computer intrusions?
In Oregon, several laws protect computer networks and prohibit hacking and other intrusions of computer systems. The Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) contain laws that prohibit computer crimes. For example, ORS 164.377 prohibits any person from accessing a computer, computer system, computer network or any part of one for the purpose of committing a crime. It is also illegal to alter, damage, or destroy any computer data, interfere with the normal operations of a computer, or access a computer without authorization. ORS 165.800 prohibits the unauthorized use of computers and computer networks to harm people or property. This includes the “unauthorized” installation of viruses, sending of unwanted emails, and any other malicious acts intended to cause harm. In addition to these laws, Oregon also has a specific statute regarding computer hacking. ORS 165.719 prohibits any person from knowingly and without authorization accessing or attempting to access a computer, computer system, or computer network. This also includes using a computer to gain access to any other computer, computer system or computer network without the authorization of the owner. Oregon also has a statute specifically relating to cyberstalking. ORS 165.774 makes it a crime to use computers, computer networks, the internet, or any other form of electronic communication to threaten or harm another person. Overall, Oregon has numerous laws forbidding hacking and other computer intrusions. It is important for everyone to understand these laws to help ensure that computer networks remain safe and secure.
