Are there any laws that limit certain kinds of internet content?
In North Carolina, like many other states, there are laws that limit certain kinds of internet content. These laws are typically referred to as “cybercrimes” and are aimed at limiting activities such as the unauthorized access of computers, the disclosure of confidential information, and the transmission of illegal content such as child pornography. North Carolina law prohibits “cyberbullying,” which is defined as using the internet, email, or other electronic communications to harm or threaten another person. This includes sending mean or hurtful messages, spreading rumors, or posting embarrassing information about another person online. In addition, North Carolina law prohibits using the internet to solicit a minor under the age of 18 for any sexual activity. Falsely impersonating another person online is also a crime in North Carolina, as is posting private images or videos of someone without their permission. It is illegal to post confidential or private information about someone without their permission, and those who do can be charged with a class 1 misdemeanor. Finally, North Carolina has a number of laws that limit the distribution of obscene material. This includes the distribution of material that depicts sexual conduct in an offensive manner and that lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. This applies to both websites and social media platforms, and transmitting or possessing offensive material can lead to criminal charges.
