What are the requirements for obtaining a license to perform construction work?

In California, anyone who performs construction work must have a valid license. Depending on the type of construction a contractor is performing, they must have either a A, B, C-8, C-10, C-16, C-20, C-34, C-36, C-38, C-42, C-43, C-46, C-50, C-51, C-53, C-54, C-55, C-57, C-61, C-64, C-67, C-72 or C-73 license. The initial steps for obtaining a license are the same for all of the categories. The contractor must apply to the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) and get a license bond from an insurance company or a surety bond company. The contractor must also provide proof of insurance, valid government IDs, and proof of workers’ compensation insurance. Once the application is complete, the contractor will be required to take a trade exam. Depending on the type of license, this could be an open book, closed book, or a combination of both. The contractor will also have to pass a law and business exam. Once all of the tests are completed and the application is approved, the contractor must complete the license requirements set out by the DCA. This includes completing continuing education courses and meeting the financial requirements set out by the DCA. Once all requirements are completed, the contractor can apply for the actual license. This will include fees and a credit check to be approved. The contractor will then receive their license in the mail and they will be able to start working as a licensed contractor in California.
