What is the difference between copyright and patents?

Copyright and patents are two distinct property rights that protect the creative work of individuals. Copyright protects the original expression of ideas, while patents protect new inventions. In Florida, Copyright Law protects authors and artists from having their work reproduced or distributed without their permission. Copyright protects original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. Copyright does not protect ideas or facts, only the expression of these ideas. Copyright protection starts as soon as the work is created and lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. A patent is the exclusive right granted to an inventor in exchange for publicly disclosing the details of a new invention. It is a form of intellectual property that grants the holder the right to prohibit others from making, using, or selling an invention without permission. An invention must be new, useful, and non-obvious in order to qualify for a patent, and patent protection lasts for up to 20 years. In summary, copyright protects creative works such as literature, music, and art, while patents protect inventions and other innovative creations. Copyright laws in Florida give creators the right to control how their works are used or reproduced, and patents give inventors the exclusive right to produce and sell their inventions.
