What is copyright law?

Copyright law is a set of legal regulations designed to protect the owners of creative works such as books, music, movies, and other pieces of art. These laws are enacted by the United States government to ensure that the creators of these works get fair compensation for their work. In California, copyright law is largely determined by the federal copyright laws established by the United States Congress. Under copyright law, creators are granted exclusive rights to their works which means that no one else can reproduce the work without the permission of the owner. This includes the right to make copies, sell copies, and distribute the work. Furthermore, the law gives the owner the exclusive right to create derivative works and adaptations of the original work. Creators can register their work with the United States Copyright Office in order to receive further protection. Once a work has been registered, it is protected under the law and creators are able to sue to protect their work in court. In California, copyright law requires that any works created after January 1, 1978, are automatically protected. This means that the creator can choose to not register the work with the Copyright Office, but they will still be able to seek protection in court should they need to. While copyright laws are largely the same from state to state, California has specific laws regarding the time lengths of copyright protection and the rights of musicians performing at certain venues.
