What happens if I violate copyright law?

In Nebraska, if a person violates copyright law they can face serious penalties. Depending on the severity of the violation, it could result in civil or criminal penalties. Civil penalties could be a court-ordered injunction against the infringing activity, an award of monetary damages to the copyright holder, and/or costs and attorney’s fees. Criminal penalties can involve fines, and in some cases, imprisonment for up to one year. If copyright laws are violated, the responsible party may be liable for damages to the copyright holder. This includes actual damages, such as lost profits, as well as statutory damages, which are set amounts that are awarded to the copyright holder without need to prove damages. It is also possible for violators to face a charge of criminal copyright infringement, which can involve a fine and/or imprisonment for up to five years. Criminal copyright infringement is punishable when it involves the reproduction or distribution of works that are valued at more than $1000. It is important to remember that copyright laws exist to protect the rights of authors, artists, and creators of works. Violation of the law is taken seriously and could result in serious legal consequences. It is important to understand the law and respect the rights of others to ensure that violations do not occur.
