What is copyright piracy?
Copyright piracy is the illegal reproduction, distribution or use of copyrighted materials without the permission of the copyright holder. It is a form of stealing intellectual property. In North Carolina, copyright piracy is subject to stiff penalties and legal action. Using copyrighted material for profit without permission from the copyright holder is a serious offense that can result in a long jail term as well as massive fines. If found guilty of copyright piracy, a person could be facing up to five years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000. Copyright piracy can also take the form of “bootlegging” which is the unauthorized duplication and sale of copyrighted material. This includes illegally selling or renting books, movies, music, software or any other type of copyrighted material. Illegal downloading and uploading of copyrighted material over the internet also falls under the category of copyright piracy. This includes downloading music, movies or any other type of copyrighted material from free online sites without permission from the copyright holder. This is also considered copyright piracy and is subject to the same penalties as mentioned above. In North Carolina, copyright piracy is a serious crime and is punishable by law. It is important to make sure to obtain permission from the copyright holder before reproducing or using copyrighted materials, regardless of whether it is done for profit or for free.
