What is a copyright notice?
A copyright notice is a piece of information that is placed on copyrighted material. It is meant to give notice to the public of ownership of the material and the exclusive rights that the owner has to the material, as provided by the Copyright Law of Texas. The copyright notice can typically be found at the beginning or end of a publication or on the page where the material is located. The copyright notice includes the copyright symbol or the abbreviation “copr.”, the year of publication, and the name of the owner. For example, the copyright notice for a publication may look like this: © 2020 ABC Company. The copyright notice serves as a deterrent for others to copy or use the material without permission, as the owner can take legal action against anyone who is found to have violated their exclusive rights. In addition, in some cases, having a copyright notice may be a prerequisite for obtaining certain types of intellectual property (IP) protection. By placing a copyright notice on material, the owner is also making a public record of their claim to the material in the event that a dispute arises over its ownership.
