What is the Berne Convention?
The Berne Convention is an international treaty that sets standards for copyrights throughout the world. It was first adopted in 1886 and is now administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The Berne Convention provides copyright protection for authors of original works in almost any form, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and other intellectual works. It also creates exclusive economic rights for authors, including the right to reproduce, display, and perform their work. In Oklahoma, the enactment of House Bill 2298 in 1998 has meant that the state now complies with the minimum standards set out in the Berne Convention. This means that authors in Oklahoma are able to protect their work from unauthorized use or reproduction, with appropriate legal remedies for potential infringements. This applies to works created both before and after the adoption of the Berne Convention. It also applies to works that were created outside the US, so long as the country in which the work was created is also a signatory of the Convention. In general, copyright law in Oklahoma provides authors with an exclusive right to their intellectual works, protecting their expression of ideas. The Berne Convention is an international standard that has been adopted by Oklahoma, providing additional protection and creating uniformity in copyright protection for authors worldwide.
