What is the scope of copyright protection?

Copyright protection is an important legal tool to protect an individual’s original work in Minnesota. Copyright law in this state protects original works of authorship such as, literary, musical, and dramatic works, sound recordings, pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works, motion pictures and other audiovisual works, and architectural works. Moreover, copyright protection applies to any original work that is fixed in any tangible medium of expression, from which it can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. This means that the work does not have to be published, nor is the copyright automatically conferred when an original work is created. Copyrights generally provide the author or author’s representative exclusive rights to reproduce, adapt, publicly display, and distribute copyrighted materials for a set period of time. Likewise, copyright protection in Minnesota also protects against unauthorized use of an individual’s work, allowing the author or author’s representative to pursue legal action. In the United States, the scope of copyright protection is broad. This means that a large range of original works are protected from unauthorized use. It also means that, in most cases, a copyright author has the power to pursue legal action against an individual or business that has infringed on their work. This legal action can include a previous agreement to the use of the work, or monetary compensation for the use of the work.
