What is the TEACH Act?

The TEACH Act, which stands for Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization, is a piece of federal legislation from the United States. In Texas, the TEACH Act helps provide educational institutions with certain copyright exemptions so that students can learn and enjoy protected works without repercussions. The main purpose of the TEACH Act is to allow educators to use copyrighted materials with ease in online or distance education courses. This allows teachers to provide students with access to learning materials such as movies, music, or books without infringing on the copyright of the material. The TEACH Act is intended to promote distance learning by allowing educators to create educational multimedia files for students to access online. To be eligible for the TEACH Act exemption, the material must be used for “non-profit educational purposes” and must be “mediated” by a professor or teaching staff. The TEACH Act also stipulates that any material used must adhere to a certain set of guidelines. This includes limiting the number of copies of works used, using only a “reasonable portion” of works, and ensuring that only students and teachers enrolled in the class can access the material. The TEACH Act is an important piece of legislation in Texas and the United States as a whole. By allowing teachers to use and modify copyrighted materials for educational purposes, the TEACH Act helps foster creativity and learning in a safe and secure environment.
