How do prosecutors and defense lawyers choose a jury in criminal defense law?

In criminal defense law, prosecutors and defense lawyers have to decide who makes up the jury for a given case. Jury selection, sometimes referred to as voir dire, is the process of selecting individuals who will sit on the jury. Before beginning the selection process, both the prosecutor and defense must agree upon a sufficient number of potential jurors. After this step is complete, the two sides may make what are called “challenges for cause.” This means that an attorney can potentially strike someone from the jury if they can prove the potential juror is biased. The next step is a “peremptory challenge” which does not require a valid reason, but attorneys must remain impartial in their selections. In Texas, each side is given a set number of challenges that they can use to eliminate potential juror. During jury selection, the judge will ask potential jurors a series of questions designed to uncover any biases or strong opinions about the case. This is their way of making sure each side is given an impartial jury. The judge is also responsible for ruling on any challenges made by either side. Once the jury is chosen, both the prosecutor and defense are responsible for making their case in court. The jury then deliberates to determine whether or not the defendant is guilty. This process is an essential part of criminal defense law in Texas, as it ensures that a person accused of a crime receives a fair trial.
