How can I request a copy of my credit report for free?
Anyone in Massachusetts can request a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies. To request a free copy of your credit report, you must submit a request in writing or online. If you choose to submit your request in writing, you’ll need to include specific information that the three nationwide consumer reporting companies need to process your request. This includes your full name (including your middle initial as well as any suffixes), current address and other information that will help them verify your identity. You will also need to provide your Social Security number or driver’s license number. If you prefer to submit your request online, you may do so through the websites of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. You’ll need to provide your Social Security number and some other personal information to have your identity verified. To ensure the accuracy of your free credit report, you should review it carefully for mistakes or errors. If you find any mistakes or errors, contact the credit reporting company and file a dispute. Massachusetts’ Credit Repair Law provides you with certain rights and protections when it comes to disputing errors and requesting copies of your credit report.
