What safety measures are cruise ships required to have in place?
In Washington, cruise ships are required to adhere to safety regulations to keep passengers safe while at sea. All vessels must meet the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) standard, which ensures the safety of the ship and its passengers. Cruise ships must have an onboard medical clinic that is staffed with personnel trained in medical and nursing care. The medical staff must be available around the clock and able to respond to any medical emergencies. The clinic must also be equipped with appropriate medical equipment and supplies. Each cruise ship must have lifeboats and other lifesaving appliances that are capable of accommodating all the people on the ship. These lifesaving appliances must be tested and approved by the United States Coast Guard before being used on the ship. Additionally, all cruise ships must have an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) installed. The beacon is designed to alert the appropriate authorities if the vessel gets into distress. Cruise ships must also have fire safety systems and other firefighting equipment to reduce the risk of fires onboard. Finally, cruise ships must have safety drills and familiarization tours which are conducted to properly equip passengers in the event of an emergency. These drills are designed to help passengers leave the ship quickly and safely in the event an emergency situation should arise.
