What is the difference between a general maritime law and a Jones Act?

The Jones Act is a specific law that was put into place to protect seamen who are injured while working on a vessel. This act provides a remedy for an injured worker to recover monetary damages from their employer for any negligence on the part of the employer. Under the Jones Act, an injured worker can bring a claim for negligence and for any medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering related to the injury. General maritime law is the body of laws that apply to the ocean and to the boats and vessels that sail upon it. This law governs the relationship between vessels and the ocean, and it also governs the relationships between crew members, passengers, vessel owners and anyone else with a stake in the vessel. General maritime law gives passengers the right to recover damages for injury or death due to a vessel’s unseaworthiness or negligence of its crew members. The key difference between the Jones Act and general maritime law is that the Jones Act applies only to seamen, while general maritime law applies to all people aboard a vessel. Additionally, the Jones Act only applies to negligence and unseaworthiness claims based on the vessel and its crew, while general maritime law applies to all vessels, regardless of who owns them. Finally, the Jones Act is a specialized area of law with its own set of rules, while general maritime law is a larger body of law that provides protection for everyone regardless of their status as a seaman.
