How long does it take for the bankruptcy filing to be finalized?

In Texas, filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy can usually take anywhere from 3 to 6 months from start to finish to be finalized. When a person files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Texas, the bankruptcy case must be filed with the Bankruptcy Court, and the court must approve the case before it is finalized. This process can take some time, since the court must review the case and make sure all documentation is in order before it can be approved. Once the bankruptcy filing has been approved, the court will issue a discharge order which states that all qualified debt has been discharged, meaning that it can no longer legally be collected upon. The discharge order takes effect immediately upon approval and can take up to a few weeks to be sent to the debtor and to all creditors. Once the discharge order has been delivered to all affected parties, the bankruptcy case is officially closed, and the debtor’s name is removed from all credit reports for a period of seven years. This means that the bankruptcy case is officially finalized and the debtor is now legally protected from any further collection attempts on the discharged debt.
