What is a lump sum payment of child support?

A lump sum payment of child support is a one-time payment made to cover a parent’s past due child support obligation. In Massachusetts, this payment is an agreement between parties which can be made through the Probate and Family Court or a mutually agreed upon legal document outside of court. The lump sum payment can be used to satisfy arrearages, or past due payments, or it can be used as a payment made in advance of current obligations. Lump sum payments of child support are either paid in full or in installments. If the lump sum payment is paid in full, then the parent paying the support must fulfill the full amount of the agreed upon payment at once, or the required installments must be fully paid by a certain date. The parent receiving the payment may be required to sign a statement acknowledging that the full payment has been received. In Massachusetts, lump sum payments must be properly disclosed and documented. The specifics of the agreement must be noted in writing and all parties must sign the agreement. In addition, the lump sum payment must be reported to the child support enforcement agency. Lump sum payments are generally not allowed to be used to reduce future child support payments. Overall, lump sum payments of child support are one-time payments made to cover a parent’s past due child support obligation. In Massachusetts, the specifics of the agreement must be properly disclosed, documented, and reported to the child support enforcement agency. Lump sum payments can be paid in full or in installments, but they cannot be used to reduce future child support payments.
