How can I receive child support from a parent living in another state?

If you and your child’s other parent live in different states, you may be able to use a process called “interstate enforcement” to get child support from the non-custodial parent (NCP). In North Carolina, the Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for enforcing child support when the NCP lives in another state. To use interstate enforcement, you can first apply for assistance from the Department by completing a child support application and submitting it to your local child support services office. After your application is processed, the Department will contact the other state’s child support agency to initiate the enforcement process. If the other state is a part of the Interstate Compact for Child Support Enforcement, then your case can be sent for enforcement, and they can decide to issue a support order, modify an existing support order, or enforce an existing order. In some instances, the Department may be able to enforce child support without the other state’s involvement. For example, if you know where the NCP is employed, the Department can contact that employer and get them to withhold child support payments from the NCP’s paychecks. By using the interstate enforcement process, you can often get the child support payments you need from a parent living in a different state.
