How are overseas child support payments enforced?
Child support payments made overseas in Washington State can be enforced in two different ways: by the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) and by the court system. When payments are made in a foreign country, the OCSE works with the foreign government to enforce child support payments. This is done through a number of methods, including: working with the foreign government to establish an administrative process for enforcing child support payments, working with the foreign government to enforce federal and state laws, and providing legal assistance to the foreign government in enforcing child support payments. Additionally, the court system in Washington State can also enforce child support payments made overseas. If the foreign government is not able or willing to enforce the payment, then the Washington court can obtain a judgment from the foreign government allowing it to enforce the payment. The court will then attempt to collect the payment from the obligor (the person responsible for paying the child support). If the obligor refuses to make the payment, the court can enforce payment through wage garnishment, bank account levy, or other collection actions. Finally, parents who have failed to pay child support overseas can have their passport revoked or denied. This can be a powerful tool for enforcing child support payments, as it can make it difficult for the person to travel. However, passport revocation is not automatically imposed in every case, so it is best to speak with an attorney to learn more about the specific facts of your case.
