What is a civil union?
A civil union is a legal, formal, marriage-like union between two people. This marriage-like relationship provides the same rights as traditional marriage, allowing the partners to share in each other’s Social Security benefits, health insurance, and other financial responsibilities. These types of unions allow for many of the same rights as traditional marriage but do not carry the same religious or societal expectations. Civil unions in Oklahoma were first established in 2017. According to the rule, any two unmarried adults who are not blood relatives can enter into a civil union. The civil union is entered into in front of a notary public, and the license is kept on file with the state. Signing the civil union document allows the two parties to share parental and economic rights and responsibilities. The legal aspect of the civil union is also important as it gives each partner the right to make health care decisions for the other in the case of an emergency. It also gives the partners the ability to pass on property and assets in the event of death or incapacitation. Lastly, it gives couples the ability to make decisions on medical issues such as in-vitro fertilization or adoption. Overall, a civil union is a formal, legal union between two people that is similar to marriage, but without the religious or social expectations of traditional marriage. This union grants many of the same rights as traditional marriage, such as the ability to make medical, financial, and parental decisions for each other. Civil unions in Oklahoma are legally recognized and are an option for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples.
