Does a civil union provide the same rights and responsibilities as marriage?

In Utah, civil unions do not provide the same rights and responsibilities as marriage. A civil union is an agreement between two people of the same or opposite sex that creates a committed relationship with some of the rights and responsibilities of marriage. A civil union does not grant the same rights as marriage, such as the ability to file joint tax returns, to be covered under a spouse’s Social Security benefits, the ability to make medical decisions for a partner, or the right to receive spousal support in the event of a divorce. In Utah, civil unions also do not grant the same legal protections as marriage, such as inheritance rights, hospital visitation, and the ability to make decisions about a partner’s body in the event of their death. Additionally, civil union couples in Utah cannot use the title “spouse” and do not receive the same recognition or protection from the state as married couples. Therefore, it is clear that civil unions do not provide the same rights and responsibilities as marriage in the state of Utah.
