Which states allow civil unions?
Civil unions are a legally recognized type of union similar to marriage but with fewer benefits. While civil unions are not recognized in all states, some states have adopted civil unions or have their own laws that recognize them. Currently, in the United States, nine states and the District of Columbia allow for civil unions. The states that allow for civil unions are: California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Each of these states has their own laws that define the privileges, benefits, and responsibilities associated with civil unions. In Oregon, civil unions are legally recognized and are treated similar to marriages. Partners in a civil union have many rights and responsibilities under Oregon law, including the right to make medical decisions, the right to jointly own property, the right to sue for wrongful death and other damages, and the right to file joint tax returns. Additionally, a surviving partner in a civil union is also eligible for a survivor benefit from the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). In summary, currently, nine states and the District of Columbia allow for civil unions. These states are California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. In Oregon, civil unions are legally recognized and provide partners with many of the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.
