Which countries recognize civil unions?
Civil unions are legal arrangements similar to marriage, but without the full legal recognition of marriage. In Arkansas, civil unions are not recognized, but there are still countries around the world that do recognize civil unions. The countries that recognize civil unions primarily fall within Europe, but some countries in other parts of the world do offer civil unions. In Europe, countries like France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Italy all recognize civil unions. Other countries outside of Europe that recognize civil unions include South Africa, Israel, and New Zealand. These civil unions offer similar rights to marriage, but may not offer the same benefits. For example, in France, couples in a civil union are not able to adopt a child together, while marriages are allowed to adopt. In other countries, such as the United Kingdom, civil unions are able to adopt children together and have the same rights afforded to married couples. In the United States, civil unions are only recognized in a few states, and some states have adopted same-sex marriage instead. Arkansas does not recognize civil unions, so couples looking to gain the same rights as married couples do not have this option open to them. Civil unions may be recognized in some countries around the world, but couples in Arkansas will have to look for other ways to gain rights equal to marriage.
