How do I register for a civil union?
In Washington, registering for a civil union is a three-step process. First, both partners must fill out a Certificate of Registration of Domestic Partnership Form. This form requires basic information about the partners including their full names, addresses, and birth dates. It also requires information about any previous marriages and/or civil unions that either partner may have had. Once the form is completed, both partners must sign it in front of a notary public. Second, the signed form should be presented to your county clerk’s office. The clerk’s office will review the form and issue a civil union license. This license must be presented to the officiant who will be performing the civil union ceremony. Third, once the license is obtained, a civil union ceremony must be performed. The officiant will sign the license and return it to the clerk’s office. The clerk’s office will then issue a Certificate of Domestic Partnership. Once the Certificate of Domestic Partnership is obtained, the civil union is now legally recognized in Washington. The certificate serves as proof of the civil union and gives the partners the same rights and benefits of married couples. It is important to note that these rights and benefits are only recognized at the state level.
