Are there tax benefits associated with a civil union?
In Texas, civil unions are not legally recognized, so there are no tax benefits associated with them. Civil unions are a way for couples to formalize a relationship that is not based on marriage, but carries with it many of the same benefits and responsibilities. Many couples who choose to enter into a civil union are concerned about the legal implications of the union in terms of rights and obligations. However, even though Texas does not recognize civil unions, the IRS does provide some tax benefits to same-sex couples who are in a civil union or domestic partnership in states that recognize them. These benefits include the ability to file a joint federal tax return and be eligible for spousal deductions. Couples who are in a civil union in other states can also take advantage of other federal benefits, such as Social Security benefits, family leave, and estate tax deductions. Even though Texas does not recognize a civil union, the IRS does offer some tax benefits to couples who are in a civil union in other states. However, it is important to note that the IRS does not recognize civil unions in Texas, so these tax benefits would not apply to civil union partners in Texas.
