How do I dissolve a civil union?

In Utah, dissolution of a civil union is a legal process that is very similar to that of a divorce. In order to dissolve a civil union, one or both parties must file a Petition for Dissolution of Civil Union with the court. This is done by filing the appropriate paperwork with the court. The Petition for Dissolution of Civil Union contains information including the time the civil union was created, the names of the parties, the official name of the civil union, and the reasons why the parties wish to dissolve it. Once the paperwork is filed, the court will grant the parties a Notice of Dissolution of Civil Union and will also set a hearing date. At the hearing, both parties must appear in court in order to present their case for dissolution. During this hearing, the court may ask questions and will make a ruling based on evidence presented. If the court finds that it is appropriate, the court can grant a Decree of Dissolution of Civil Union. This decree is a court order that dissolves the civil union and legally separates the parties. Once the civil union has been dissolved, both parties will be restored to their status as single individuals with the freedom to enter into a new civil union or marriage if they choose to do so. The dissolution of a civil union is granted by the court and is binding on both parties.
