What documents are required to enter into a civil union?
In California, individuals who wish to enter into a civil union must meet certain requirements and submit several documents. These documents include a Declaration of Domestic Partnership or a Status Declaration (depending on the county), a Certificate of Domestic Partnership, and proof of the individuals’ identities. The Declaration of Domestic Partnership or Status Declaration is a form that needs to be signed by both parties. On the form, each individual must provide personal information such as their name, mailing address, and phone number. They also must state their age and declare that they meet the requirements for a civil union, such as being of the same sex, unmarried, and at least 18 years old. The Certificate of Domestic Partnership is also known as a registration form, and must be filled out by the county registrar. This form requires each individual to provide the same information that was already provided on the Declaration of Domestic Partnership. Proof of identity must also be provided and can come in the form of a birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, or other government-issued photo identification. This proof must also be presented to the county registrar in order for the civil union to be registered. Once all of the required documents have been submitted and approved by the county, the civil union is officially registered. Once registered, the two parties are considered to be in a civil union with each other and have the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.
