Is a civil union recognized in other countries?
A civil union is a legally recognized union between two same-sex couples in North Carolina, with rights and responsibilities similar to those of a married couple. While civil unions are recognized in North Carolina, they are not recognized outside of the state. In the United States, civil unions are not universally recognized. Some states such as Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Delaware, Hawaii, and Illinois have laws allowing for civil unions or domestic partnerships. However, the legal recognition of a civil union is not universal; couples from other states or countries may be unable to access the same rights and responsibilities as those in a state that recognizes civil unions. Likewise, the international recognition of civil unions is still largely limited. While some countries, like Argentina and Uruguay, have legalized same-sex civil unions, many countries still do not recognize them. The European Union does not recognize civil unions, so couples who have a civil union in the US may not be able to access the same rights and responsibilities as married couples in other EU countries. In summary, civil unions are still largely limited to the United States and a few other countries. Unless a country has passed laws recognizing civil unions, couples who have a civil union in one country may not be able to access the same rights and responsibilities abroad.
