Are there any restrictions on the number of civil unions that may be entered into?
In Washington, civil unions are a legally recognized relationship that provides many of the same benefits to the couple involved as marriage. Although any two people of the same or opposite sex can enter into a civil union, there are some restrictions on the number of civil unions that may be entered into. All civil unions are required to be officially recorded with the state. As such, a person is not allowed to enter into more than one civil union in Washington at any given time. This means that if someone has a civil union with one person, they cannot enter into a civil union with a second person until the first civil union has been dissolved or terminated. Additionally, civil unions are not allowed to be established between two people already in a marriage or another type of legally recognized relationship in Washington. Thus, if one or both parties in a potential civil union have an existing marital or civil union relationship, then no additional civil union can be established. Overall, the number of civil unions that can be entered into are restricted by Washington state law. Individuals must dissolve or terminate existing civil unions before entering a new one and civil unions cannot be established between two people in another legally recognized relationship. Doing so may result in legal penalties.
