How do I register my civil union with the state?

In order to register your civil union with the state of Delaware, you must follow certain steps. First, both parties must complete an application for a Civil Union Certificate. This application must be signed by both parties and notarized. You can obtain the application from the office of the Register of Wills in the county in which one of the parties resides. Once the application is completed, you must present it with proof of identification (such as a driver’s license, passport, or birth certificates) to the Register of Wills where you are seeking to register the civil union. You must also include a fee for registering the civil union. The Register of Wills will then review the application and issue a Civil Union Certificate. Once the Civil Union Certificate has been issued, the two parties must have a civil union ceremony officiated by an authorized official. This ceremony must be witnessed by at least two individuals. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the legal document to the Register of Wills with the appropriate fee. Finally, the Register of Wills will then properly record the civil union and issue an official Certificate of Civil Union. This document serves as evidence of the state-recognized union between the parties. Keep this certificate in a safe place as you may need it for legal purposes.
