How do I register my civil union with the state?

In order to register a civil union in the state of Texas, you must first have your civil union recognized by the county clerk. You must first obtain a license from the clerk of the county in which you will be married. You must then present your license to the clerk, who will issue a civil union certificate for you and your partner. After that, you can register your civil union by completing the civil union application form and submitting it to the Texas secretary of state. Once your application is approved, the secretary of state will issue a certificate of registration for your civil union. This certificate will serve as proof of your civil union in Texas. You may also be required to file a copy of the registration form with the county clerk and/or the local county courthouse if requested by law. As a reminder, all civil unions must be registered in a county other than the county in which you live. You must also obtain a special marriage license, called a Domestic Partnership Recognition Affidavit, from the county clerk. This affidavit must be signed by both partners and witnessed by at least two adults. Finally, you may be required to take a civil union education course within 180 days of registering your civil union. This course is available online or through your county clerk’s office. Completing this course will ensure that both of you understand the rights and responsibilities associated with your civil union. Once you have completed the necessary steps, your civil union will be officially registered with the state of Texas.
