Are there any international implications of a civil union?
Civil union law in Arizona is a hybrid between a common law marriage and a legally recognized marriage. Because of this, there are some international implications to consider. First, if a couple from Arizona enters into a civil union in the state and then moves to a foreign country, they will need to determine if the foreign country recognizes their civil union. If not, then the couple may not be able to get the same benefits as they would if their marriage were legally recognized in the foreign country. Second, couples in a civil union who travel abroad could experience difficulties with immigration authorities. If the foreign country does not recognize civil unions, then the couple could be treated as two individuals and not as a family unit. This could cause problems with obtaining visas, permanent residency, and social benefits. Third, if a member of the couple is not a citizen of the country in which the civil union was established, then issues of citizenship and national identity can come into play. For example, the couple’s children may not be eligible for citizenship in the foreign country as a result of the civil union. Finally, depending on the laws in the foreign country, the dissolution of a civil union may not be recognized in the foreign country. This could mean that the couple would still need to go through the legal proceedings to have it dissolved in the foreign country in order for it to be officially terminated.
