Are civil unions recognized for housing benefits?
In Oklahoma, civil unions are not recognized for housing benefits. As of 2020, Oklahoma is one of the few states in the US that does not recognize any form of same-sex relationship, including civil unions. Since civil unions are not recognized, any couples in civil unions do not qualify for housing benefits. However, there is hope for progress in this area. In 2019, a bill was introduced in the Oklahoma State House which would have allowed for same-sex partners in civil unions to receive housing benefits. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass, and civil unions are still not recognized in the state. Additionally, although certain cities in Oklahoma provide certain protections to LGBT partners, there is no statewide recognition of civil unions. There are also no federal laws that currently recognize civil unions in the US. This means that same-sex couples in civil unions across all states do not qualify for housing benefits in cases where the benefits are dependent upon a legally recognized marriage or other union. Overall, although civil unions are not currently recognized for housing benefits in Oklahoma, there are movements in the state for a change in law. The future of civil union recognition in Oklahoma remains uncertain.
