Are civil unions recognized in other countries' laws?
No, civil unions are not typically recognized in other countries’ laws. In the United States, civil unions are limited to the state of New Jersey. Civil unions in New Jersey were created in 2006 as a way for same-sex couples to enjoy the same rights as a marriage but without the title of marriage. However, outside of the United States, the recognition of civil unions is far from standard. Across the globe, laws and customs regarding marriage and relationships vary wildly. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, civil partnerships are recognized which offer similar rights to a marriage but are not the same as a civil union. Other countries, such as the Republic of Ireland, have recently legalized same-sex marriage which provides the same rights to same-sex couples. In the end, the recognition of civil unions outside of New Jersey is generally rare. With most countries having laws and customs that differ from yours, it’s best to look into laws of the country you plan to visit and seek proper counsel on the recognition of New Jersey civil unions abroad.
