Are civil unions recognized in other countries' laws?

Civil unions are not legally recognized by all countries, and those that do recognize the status may have different definitions and rights associated with it. In some cases, civil unions may be legally recognized in other countries but may not provide the same level of rights as a marriage. The laws regarding civil unions vary greatly by country. In West Virginia there is no recognition of any same-sex marriage or civil union laws. In the United States, civil unions are recognized in a few states, such as New Jersey, Hawaii, Illinois, Colorado, and California. However, other states may not recognize the status and rights associated with civil unions and may even deny couples the ability to form a civil union. Internationally, the recognition of civil unions is even more varied. Some countries, like France and the Netherlands, legally recognize civil unions, but may restrict the rights granted with that status. Other countries, like Italy and Portugal, may not recognize civil unions or same-sex marriage at all. At the end of the day, it is important to understand the laws in each country that may recognize a civil union. It may be difficult to gain recognition of a civil union in a country where it is not legally recognized, leaving individuals without many of the rights and protections granted to married couples.
