Are there any age requirements for entering into a civil union?
Generally speaking, when entering into a civil union in Georgia, both of the partners must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. The only exception to this rule would be if one of the partners were sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) and had the written permission of their parents or legal guardians. Additionally, both of the partners must look to gain something from the union, or at least have some kind of contractual agreement that will benefit one or both of the partners. There are also requirements that must be met before a civil union will be recognized. The partners must file a formal application with the local county registrar’s office, and must have the legal identification and proof of age documents to prove that they meet the age requirement. The documents should include a birth certificate, marriage certificate, and proof of residence. It is important to note that entering into a civil union in Georgia is not the same as getting married. A civil union is usually formed when two partners wish to combine their assets without going through a formal, legal marriage. When two partners enter into a civil union, the assets shared between the two are typically kept separate from the assets owned by each partner individually. The responsibilities involved in a civil union are also different from those of a marriage.
