Are there any age requirements for entering into a civil union?
In Oregon, the age requirement for entering into a civil union is eighteen years of age or older. In order to enter into a civil union, both parties must be of legal age. The Oregon law states, "A civil union may be entered into only by two persons of the same sex, each of whom at least 18 years of age." If either or both of the partners are under eighteen, then the civil union cannot be legally formed, although the partners may still declare themselves to be in a civil union. For those under the age of eighteen, they can enter into a domestic partnership and receive the same benefits as a civil union. However, any civil union entered into by a minor may be annulled by a court if the court finds the minor entering into the civil union did not understand the implications of the civil union. This includes understanding the rights and responsibilities of the union to the minor. The minor must also prove they were entering into the union without the consent of their legal guardian. Therefore, the age requirement for entering into a civil union is eighteen years or older. Any civil union entered into by a minor may be annulled once the minor reaches the legal age of eighteen.
